Creating Nature Inspired Gardens – Series 1 of 4

We are building on the success of our garden series of 2021 and have teamed up with Stratford and Area Master Gardeners to bring you this lecture series as they celebrate the year of the garden. Join us on Zoom to learn about their biodiversity project ReLeaf Stratford, and listen to specialists on conserving and restoring native trees, layered gardens, small space gardening, and native pollinators.

February 10 – Dr. Stefan Weber | From Seed to Seed: Conserving and Restoring Native Trees
Dr. Stefan Weber (@UrbanVerdure) is a botanist who specializes in seed conservation and ecosystem restoration, working with the Carolinian Canada Coalition and the Ontario Plant Restoration Alliance. Stefan earned an MSc in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Guelph, and a PhD in Restoration Ecology at McMaster University. He has previously worked with the Toronto Botanical Garden, and the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario and the St Williams Nursery, helping propagate over 300 species of native plants from seed.

March 10 – Sean James | Layered Designs for Natural Gardens
Named by Landscape Ontario as 2020 and 2021’s Garden Communicator of the Year, gardening has been Sean James’ (@seanjamesdesign) hobby and profession for almost 40 years. A graduate of Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, a Master Gardener, writer and teacher, Sean focuses on eco-gardening techniques. He has spoken from the Maritimes to Seattle and landscaped from Nova Scotia to California.

April 14 – Cathy Kavassalis | Small Trees for Small Spaces
Master Gardener Cathy Kavassalis (@CathyKavassalis) is a passionate gardener and conservationist. A former chemist and teacher with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education from the University of Toronto, Cathy now volunteers as an educator and inspirational speaker promoting biodiversity.

May 12 – Dr. Victoria MacPhail | Native Plants for Pollinators
Dr. Victoria MacPhail (@VJMacPhail) is an ecologist and pollination biologist with extensive experience with many aspects of pollination, from plant breeding systems to bumblebee identification and pollinator-friendly gardening. She completed her PhD at York University looking at the benefits, challenges and scientific value of community conservation. She is a founding member and current Co-Chair of Pollination Guelph a volunteer-run charitable organization that works to protect pollinators and their habitat. She has been interviewed by tv, radio and print media and gives presentations and workshops across Ontario.
