Jakmanii Clematis

May 9, 2022

Over the winter the vine for my Clematis (Jakmanii, I believe) got overloaded with snow and the weight of the snow pulled it off the trellis. Should I clip everything back and let the plant start growing again or should I try to “re-hang” the vine on the trellis? Thank you!
Answer
If it is a Jackmanii it can be cut right back to the ground in early spring before the leaves come out. Other wise Cut it down to three buds.
In our experience, if the main stem at the bottom hasn’t been damaged, I would attempt to reattach it to the trellis and cut back any broken or cracked branches to the main stem. If the main stem has been badly damaged or cracked, I would cut it off completely and let it re-grow. Thanks for your question. M. Elliot
