SUMMARY:Controlling Invasive Phragmites - The light at the end of the tunnel
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Invasive Species Centre\, this presentation provides background information on Canada’s worst invasive plant\, why it is such a concern and control methods used in sensitive habitats. It will also highlight successful control programs underway throughout Ontario and a Green Shovels Coalition lead plan toward implementing a province-wide control program. \nThis webinar will be presented by Janice Gilbert. Janice is a wetland ecologist with a PhD from Ohio State University and over 25 years of experience researching and assessing these invaluable ecosystems. She began investigating invasive Phragmites impacts on wetlands and appropriate control methods in 2007. Since that time\, she has been a lead author on over 150 reports and presentations and is a contributor on a number of guiding documents. She is a founder and Co-Chair of the Ontario Phragmites Working Group and an advisor on two binational programs the Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative\, and the Phragmites Adaptive Management Framework\, which are both operated under the US Geological Service and supported by the Great Lakes Commission. Janice is currently the Executive Director of the Invasive Phragmites Control Centre\, a not-for-profit entity she founded to provide effective and environmentally responsible management of Canada’s worst invasive plant. \nEvent information & registration available here.

SUMMARY:FREE - Fruits for Small Gardens\, by Lee Reich
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Guelph Gardening Seminars (https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/guelph-garden-seminars-116969) \nAbout this event \n\n\nA link for this event will be sent out by email a couple of days before the event. \nGardens are smaller these days\, but a small garden is no impediment to fruit growing. Lowbush blueberries\, currants\, gooseberries\, and super dwarf apples are among the fruits that visually and proportionally fit well into small gardens. This lecture will present the fruits and growing techniques needed to reap delectable rewards from spaces as small as a balcony to as “large” as a small suburban yard. \nPresented by Lee Reich\, a renowned author and scientist who has a knack of simplifying gardening so anyone can do it. \nLee Reich\, PhD\, who has worked in agricultural research with the USDA and Cornell University\, is a writer and a farmdener (more than a gardener\, less than a farmer). In addition to providing a year ’round harvest of fruits and vegetables\, his farmden provides a testing ground for innovative techniques in soil care\, pruning\, and growing fruits and vegetables. For more about his online and live workshops\, his books\, and other work\, see www.leereich.com \nLee has published the following books: \nThe Ever Curious Gardener: Using a Little Natural Science for a Much Better Garden \nA Northeast Gardener’s Year \nThe Pruning Book \nWeedless Gardening \nUncommon Fruits for every Garden \nLandscaping with Fruit \nGrow Fruit Naturally
